Contemplating watercolor
Recently, I have been busy working with 1/4 sheets of watercolor paper. A couple of years ago I laid down some first layer color onto several full sheets. These sheets hung around my studio for quite some time because I was at a loss as to how to proceed with building up second and third layers of color. I was not "inspired", for lack of a better term. About 6 months ago, I finally figured out what I wanted to do. I had been masking off full sheets of 300lb paper in order to produce post cards (~20 cards per sheet) and now masked off the the old sheets in fourths. I then used different watercolor techniques on the masked off sheets to produce, in essence, 1/4 sheet postcards. Once the tape was pulled off and the full sheets cut into quarters, I found some intriguing images. Some lent themselves to the addition of text and some did not.
When I begin a project, I go at it in one of two ways. I can select text and create a watercolor for the text (This method is used mostly for commissions), or I can create a watercolor and then select text to go with the image. In this case I had the image and now had to find text that will fit it. So far, I'm still looking for text for these pieces. So, I'm kinda at the same point I was when I was contemplating what to do with the full sheets all those years ago. I'll keep you posted.
